JOURNAL OF SCIENCE OF HNUE Educational Sci., 2007,V.52, No 6, pp.3-6 ROLE, REQUIREMENTS OF ONLINE INTERACTIVE PHYSICS EXPERIMENT AND HOW TO DEVELOP THE EXPERIMENT Pham Xuan Que Hanoi University of Education Pham Kim Chung National University HaNoi Abstract. The presentation deals with the important role of the online interactive physics experiment contained in physics course ware, requirements for the experiment as well as the way to develop the experiment. Some of the online interactive physics experiment, which was developed by us, is also introduced in this presentation. In the matter of physics, the first lessons should contain nothing but what is experimental and interesting to see. A pretty experiment is in itself often more valuable than twenty formulae extracted from our minds [1]. Albert Einstein 1. Why must the online interactive physics experiment be developed? Interactive physics experiment within physics course wares is a necessary condition for not only an online active, self-reliant and creative learning, but also for a learning as researching physics, which brings the best effectiveness. While learners carry out physics experiment online, they should do the following experimental activities: collecting data, sketching graphs from collected data. From this experimental basis they build hypothesis, then verify the hypothesis with assisting software, in order to build concepts and develop a sound understanding of the experimental basis of physics as well as to develop their creative thinking. 2. What requirements are there for the online interactive physics experiment? The online interactive physics experiment must be developed, so that during the carrying out of the experiment learners feel that the physics phenomena and processes on screen are realistic, thus they believe in the data collected from the experiment are also true. Of course the online physics experiment must be interactive, so that learners can do what they want (collect data, sketch graphs from selected data and then to fit several standard functions for the sketched experimental graph ...etc). Because the physics experiment above-mentioned is an online experiment, therefore the capacity of the file containing the experiment must be small (approximately hundred KB), so that the time for loading up or down is short. 3 Ph¤m Xu¥n Qu¸ 3. How can the online interactive physics experiment be developed? In order to make sure that the physics phenomena and processes on screen are realistic, the physics phenomena and processes must be recorded by digital video camera or camera, but are not created by simulation. All of computer-aided simulations of physics phenomena and processes always bring a virtual impression, thus learners don't believe in the data collected from experiment are true. In order to create interactive characteristic of the experiment, as well as to reduce the capacity of the file containing the experiment, we can use Macromedia Flash to progamme. The physics phenomena and processes recorded by digital video camera or camera are converted into video film or pictures with a format of Macromedia Flash. Then Macromedia Flash is used to create the interactive experiment from these video film or pictures. 4. Some example of the online interactive physics experiment The online interactive physics experiments presented below encompass: - Free fall and the law of free fall - A simple harmonic oscillator and the conservation of mechanical energy a) How to use the online interactive physics experiment to research on the free fall and find out the law of the free fall [2] The learners can display the free fall of an object (Fig. 1) and collect data of coordination of object (Fig.2). After collecting data (Fig.3) they can sketch an experimental graph showing the dependence of s on t (Fig.4). An analysis of the dependence of s on t as well as the form of the graph leads to put forward a hypothesis that s depends on the time t according the function: s = at2 + bt + c The learners can sketch a standard function with the certain factors a, b and c (Fig. 5) and then they fit the standard function for the experimental graph by varying the value 4 Role, requirements of online interacticve phisics experriment and how to develop the experriment of a, b and c, so that the graph of the function with the new factors overlaps with the experimental graph (Fig. 6) If they select the fit value of a, b and c, so that the graph of the standard function overlaps with the experimental graph, the demonstration shows that s depends on the time t according the function (as their hypothesis): s = at2 + bt + c b) How to use the online interactive physics experiment to research on a simple harmonic oscillator and find out the conservation of mechanical energy By using the same method, learners can utilize the online interactive physics experiment to research on a simple harmonic oscillator and find out the conservation of mechanical energy. The figures below show steps in the process of using the online interactive physics experiment to do that. 5 Ph¤m Xu¥n Qu¸ 5. Conclusion In order to build concepts and develop a sound understanding of the experimental basis of physics as well as develop creative thinking of learners, the interactive physics experiment can't be absent itself from physics course ware. The experiment can be developed by Macromedia Flash and must satisfy the requirements for the online interactive physics experiment. REFERENCES [1]. A. Moszkowski (1970).
