730 Chapter 14 Working with a Tablet PC Practice 1 involves configuring an action for when the lid is closed, and you cannot configure this option on a desktop or virtual computer. You can still perform the rest of this practice if you do not have access to a laptop computer. Practice 1: Setting and Modifying the Power Saver Plan In this practice, you will configure a computer to use the Power Saver power plan and then modify that plan to ensure that the display is only turned off after five minutes rather than three and that shutting the lid does nothing except send the computer into hibernation. To complete the practice, perform the following steps: 1. Log on to Windows Vista with a user account that is a member of the local administrators group. 2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel in Classic View. 3. Open the Power Options item. 4. Set the Preferred Plan to Power Saver. 5. Click Change Plan Settings. 6. Change the Turn Off The Display drop-down value under the On Battery Category to 5 minutes. Click Save Changes. 7. In the Power Options dialog box, click Choose What Closing The Lid Does. 8. Change the When I Close The Lid under the On Battery category to Do Nothing. Click Save Changes. Practice 2: Configuring Advanced Power Plan Settings In this practice, you will configure the Advanced settings of the Balanced Power Options Plan. Advanced settings give a finer level of control than the basic plan settings. In this plan, you will configure the wireless adapter power settings, search and indexing settings, and battery actions. To complete the practice, perform the following steps: 1. Log on to Windows Vista with a user account that is a member of the local administrators group. 2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel in Classic View. 3. Open the Power Options item. 4. Set the Preferred Plan to Balanced. 5. Under Balanced, click Change Plan Settings. 6. In the Change Settings For The Plan: Balanced dialog box, click the Change Advanced Power Settings text. 7. In the Power Options dialog box, scroll down, and expand the Wireless Adapter Settings. Change the On Battery setting from Maximum Performance to Medium Power Saving. 8. Scroll further down to Search And Indexing. Expand this node, and change the On Battery setting from Balanced to Power Saver. Lesson 2: Configuring Power Options 731 9. Navigate down to the bottom of the Power Options Advanced Settings dialog box, and expand the Battery node. Expand the Low Battery Level, and raise the On Battery figure from 10% to 15%. 10. Click OK to close the dialog box, and then click Save Changes. Practice 3: Creating a Custom Power Plan In this practice, you will create your own power plan. To complete the practice, perform the following steps: 1. Log on to Windows Vista with a user account that is a member of the local administrators group. 2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel in Classic View. 3. Open the Power Options item. 4. Click Create A Power Plan. On the Create A Power Plan page, select Power Saver, and enter the plan name as Power Saver II. Click Next. 5. In the Change Settings For The Plan: Power Saver II, configure the settings to never turn off the display or put the computer to sleep if the computer is plugged in, as shown in Figure 14-23. Click Create to create the plan. Figure 14-23 Changing settings for a custom power plan 6. Verify that the Power Saver II plan is now being used. 7. To restore your computer to its default power saver configuration, select the Balanced plan. Click Change Plan Settings, and then click Restore Default Settings For This Plan. 732 Chapter 14 Working with a Tablet PC Lesson Summary ■ Power plans control how hardware features work and are primarily used with mobile computers to vary the drain on battery charge. ■ Power plans can also control when a computer shuts down or hibernates due to inactivity. Power plans can also be used to customize the behavior of power and hibernation buttons. ■ The default power plans are Balanced, Power Saver, and High Performance. ■ Away mode is a specific configuration that allows a media center extender to wake a media center computer. ■ Custom power plans allow specialized power settings to be stored. ■ Editing the advanced power settings allows power plans to be configured with greater detail. Users need to be able to elevate their privileges in order to edit the advanced power settings. Chapter 14 Review 735 Chapter Review To further practice and reinforce the skills you learned in this chapter, you can perform the following tasks: ■ Review the chapter summary. ■ Review the list of key terms introduced in this chapter. ■ Complete the case scenarios. These scenarios set up real-world situations involving the topics of this chapter and ask you to create a solution. ■ Complete the suggested practices. ■ Take a practice test. Chapter Summary ■ There are three options for entering text through the Input Panel—the on-screen keyboard, the character pad, and the writing pad. The on-screen keyboard gives the best precision but the slowest speed, the writing pad gives the fastest experience, and the character pad strikes a balance between the two. ■ By default, the handwriting recognition system improves recognition based on corrections made. It is also possible to improve recognition by running the personalize handwriting recognition routines. You can either provide a significant sample of handwriting for Windows Vista to analyze or target specific recognition errors. ■ Power plans are collections of hardware and system settings that determine how a computer uses power. The default plans, from lowest power usage to highest, are Power Saver, Balanced, and High Performance. It is possible to create a custom plan and to configure more detailed power plan settings. Key Terms Do you know what these key terms mean? You can check your answers by looking up the terms in the glossary at the end of the book. ■ cold boot ■ hibernation ■ pen flick ■ power plan ■ slate ■ sleep ■ tap 736 Chapter 14 Review Case Scenarios In the following case scenarios, you will apply what you have learned about configuring applications included with Windows Vista. You can find answers to these questions in the “Answers” section at the end of this book. Case Scenario 1: Tablet PCs at Tailspin Toys All the executives at Tailspin Toys have Tablet PC computers running Windows Vista Ultimate. They use the Tablet PC computers for meetings and conferences. All the Tablet PC computers are convertible, which gives the executives the greatest amount of flexibility. Because the executives are now experienced users, you have been asked to provide some tips on how they might use their Tablet PCs more efficiently. 1. Several of the executives are left-handed. How can you optimize their experience? 2. Several executives want to speed up the editing of their documents while in slate mode. Specifically, they want to be able to quickly copy and paste data. What steps can you take to help them? 3. The company’s CEO has just been given a brand new Windows Vista Tablet PC. She is concerned that she will have to teach the computer how to read her handwriting again. How can you ensure that the new computer will recognize her handwriting as well as the old one does? Case Scenario 2: Individualized Power Plans Five people in the research and development division of Wingtip Toys use Windows Vista laptop computers. Each of them has different requirements with regard to performance and battery life. Kim almost always has her laptop plugged into an AC outlet, Ian spends a fair amount of time in meetings with his computer, and Orin likes to go to the park as often as he can and work there. 1. Ian uses his laptop to read the morning news and then drives to work at Wingtip Toys. He takes 45 minutes to commute and wants to quickly restart using the laptop when he arrives at work with a minimal impact on the battery charge. Which of the following power down modes should he use? 2. Which of the default power plans would best suit Kim given what you know about her computer usage habits? 3.
